Since the early 2000s, Sydney’s Living Colour program has been a hallmark of the city’s public spaces – vibrant seasonal floral displays that bring colour, life and community connection to the heart of the city. Commissioned by the City of Sydney, this program reflects a long-standing commitment to liveable, welcoming urban environments.
A Year-Round Botanical Program
The program follows a structured seasonal calendar:
- Spring, Summer & Christmas Displays: 8 weeks each
- Hanging Basket Display: 9 months
- Greenwall Displays: 3 rotations per year
- Sydney Light Rail Displays: year-round, 4 rotations
Each season, tens of thousands of plants are installed across 23 key locations, creating a highly visible impact in Sydney’s streets and public spaces. Iconic landmarks such as St Mary’s Cathedral, Customs House, Martin Place and Town Hall are brought to life with vibrant planter boxes, hanging baskets, and greenwalls, engaging residents, workers and visitors alike.
Expertise at Scale
Glascott leads the installation and maintenance, with support from specialist subcontractors for traffic management and freight. Plants are grown by Oasis Horticulture, while original designs remain in use, ensuring consistent quality across all displays.
Peak installation requires 10–11 personnel, with an ongoing maintenance team ensuring displays thrive throughout the year. Many team members hold horticulture qualifications, reflecting the program’s technical complexity.
Sustainability and Community
At the end of each display, around 5,000 plants are repurposed by the Glascott team, with many others rehomed through local community groups, emphasising sustainability and community benefit.
