Maintaining a Live Rail Corridor: What It Actually Takes

Working in a live light rail corridor means the environment never stops moving, even when the maintenance schedule does.

Parramatta Light Rail is one of Western Sydney’s most active public transport hubs. Commuters, cyclists, pedestrians – the corridor is in constant use from early morning to late evening. For the teams responsible for maintaining it, work is planned carefully around that activity.

Glascott holds the landscape maintenance contract across the full corridor: 16 stations, plus surrounding gardens, pedestrian pathways, green spaces and connecting cycleways. In total, 37 sites are maintained on a programmed rotation to ensure consistent standards across the network over a three-year contract.

The challenge

Landscape maintenance in a live rail environment is more complex than it looks.

Every task – hedging, pruning, general upkeep – has to be planned around peak hours, rail operations and constant foot traffic. There’s no window to catch up, no quiet moment to work through the backlog. The public is always present, which means the team has to be switched on at all times.

It’s the kind of work that demands focus not just in the technical sense, but in the human one. Being aware of your surroundings, working safely alongside the public, and maintaining a standard that reflects well on a busy, visible piece of community infrastructure.

The standard shows

That level of care becomes part of the culture. On a recent visit to one of the stations, our team leader was going about the day – guiding her crew, working through the tasks – when a train came through. The driver waved. Then another did. They knew who she was.

It’s a small detail, but on a contract like this, it says everything about the presence required and broader team environment that keeps the corridor moving each day.
